There are a lot of ways on how to make your home look awesome, even if you have a restricted area or a small space. One of which is by creating a simple vertical garden.

Interestingly, you are not only able to build an ordinary garden, but you can try your hand at vertical gardening. You can either build an indoor or outdoor vertical garden.

Or an easier option, buy a vertical gardening kit. Either way, let’s find out all about vertical gardens, and why it’s so important to have a garden at home.

Growing Plants on an Outside Wall

What Can You Grow in Vertical Gardens?

A garden is a place where you can grow a number of plants such as flowers, herbs, and other plants; which doesn’t have to be in the ground to achieve! Having a small place does not have to limit you to miss out on fresh wholesome foods you can grow yourself. Which can be obtained in a vertical garden.

When is Vertical Gardening Important?

Vertical gardening is very useful when ground gardening is not feasible.

Some homeowners prefer to have vertical gardens because of several reasons. There are a few reasons why you may choose vertical gardening.

  • When you have a small area and cannot build a large garden
  • When you have limited space to have a regular garden
  • Living in the city or an apartment where there is no yard
  • When certain mobility is limited for a traditional garden

We actually use container and vertical gardening because we live on a mountaintop with little ground space; we have mostly rocks and ledges. Since I also have back issues, vertical gardening is an added bonus! Uniqueness and beauty are a value to your home that a vertical garden can bring.

In any case, you can use some best plants for a vertical garden in various colors. You can even build a special garden for vegetables. Did you know, a vertical garden is also suitable for an indoor garden? It means that you do not need to build a large garden, but a simple vertical garden will suffice.

A vertical garden is good to go green to save our environment. too! By providing us fresh air every day. Moreover, it is also safe to have such a vertical garden inside the house, especially in the kitchen. See the shop below for ideas.

How to Build a Vertical Vegetable Garden?

Somehow, you prefer to grow some vegetables in your vertical garden, but you have no idea how to create one. In fact, there are a lot of ways on how to accomplish such a vegetable garden in your home.

The basic principle of this garden is to build a garden vertically. You actually can try your own idea to build such a nice vertical garden. Here are some tips on how to build a vertical garden.

Vertical gardening planters can be made from wood.

The first simple way to build a vertical garden is by building a wooden rack.  Start to build some levels of racks made from wood. (Do NOT use Pressure-Treated wood). You can use two wooden pillars to connect each rack-(these may be pressure-treated wood since they will not touch the food). Try pallets, they are usually oak and free, mostly for the asking.

Let say, that you build five levels of a rack. In the end, you can put some pots with vegetables in the rack. You can put this vertical garden close to the wall, or attach the vertical garden to the wall to make it stronger using the proper hooks and hangers, also known as anchors.

Materials Needed for Hanging Strawberries

If you do not like the wooden rack idea, then you may use some chain to build a unique vertical garden. In this case, you need to use two pairs of long chains that you can hang on the ceiling (or under the over-hang as we did) close to the wall. Each pair of the chain will hold four or five PVC tubing.

I love to grow my strawberries in PVC tubes using this method. I purchased a 10′ length Schedule 40 PVC, cut in half (the store will cut in half for free) this will yield 2

  • 3-inch PVC-5 foot lengths
  • Drill 2-inch holes along the top.
  • Spacing the holes 5-inches apart (11 holes total-starting 5-inches from the end of the pipe)
  • 3-inch expanding plugs on each end
  • Fill with good compost/mushroom dirt

Attaching Planters to Outside Walls

If you do not want to build racks or vertical gardens with chains, you can just use some vegetable pots that you can attach to your house wall. In this case, you must choose plastic or wooden pots so you can easily attach them to the wall.

You will need to organize the pots vertically. But, you must keep in mind that this hanging pot vertical garden is only suitable for an anchored wooden or block wall.

Pyramind Vertical Gardening

Another cool option for the best vertical gardening is a pyramid vertical garden that looks so attractive. In this case, you just need to build a pyramid-like rack with four sections. This consists of building six levels of a rack on each section. The bottom part uses a larger rack while the top part uses a small rack. This pyramid vertical garden does not only look unique, but it is also portable.

If you use a wooden wall, you can easily build a balcony like a vertical garden. In this case, you just need to build some small square pots vertically that look like apartment balconies. The pots are also made from wood material that you attach to the wall. Then, you can fill the pots with some vegetables or the best plants for a vertical garden.

What Are the Best Plants for Vertical Gardening?

At this point, you may be asking, you want are the best plants that are suitable for simple vertical gardens? Interestingly enough, you cannot just choose random plants because some plants may not grow in the vertical garden.

Most of my popular plants to grow vertically are:

StrawberriesScallions/ChivesHerbs
PeppersLettuceTomatoes

In addition to vegetables, you can also grow some awesome flowers on your vertical gardens But, make sure that you choose some small flowers such as pansies, bachelor buttons, small zinnias, and such or you can also plant some fruits like strawberry and other plants. Basically, you can grow almost any plant but make sure that you choose the smaller ones.

Vertical gardens are also suitable for vines, but not recommended to use for indoor vertical gardens. An outdoor vertical garden is suitable for flowers, vegetables, and fruits while an indoor plant wall is suitable for vegetables and herbs.

In Conclusion to Vertical Gardens
