Types of Bread for French Toast

There are Many Different Types of Bread to Use for Non-Soggy French Toast Recipe

Almost any type of bread can be used to make French toast. Refrain from straight out of the oven-fresh bread. The staler the bread is, the better. Here are some of my favorite types of bread to make this classic French toast recipe.

  • Yesterdays or the day before homemade cinnamon bread
  • Texas Toast store-bought bread is also a champion
  • Thin bread is not best since the bread will become soggier than thicker bread
  • Sourdough is an added twang to the French toast
  • Brioche
  • Challah

How Thick to Slice Bread for French Toast?

Slicing homemade bread should be done between semi-thin to medium thick for a non-soggy French toast.

The best width I found for hand-cutting bread is around a ½ to ¾ of an inch up to one inch. But this does not have to be an exact measurement. If you have a bread slicer, then I would suggest using 2 slots as one cut.

A razor-sharp serrated or an electric knife will most positively give the best cut. A slice that is semi-thin to medium thick is most desirable for a non-soggy French toast.

How to Dry out Bread for French Toast

If using bread bought from a store that is pre-sliced, it’s most practical to let the bread sit out over-night in an oven, bread box, or even a toaster oven. You would want something without heat, light, and won’t let the bugs land on the bread.

If using homemade bread for this French toast recipe, it will become stale faster on its own for lack of preservatives. The bread will dry out most likely within a day, so is not required to let it sit out overnight. Day-old bread or even longer is best for a crispy French toast.

In a hurry or forgot to take out the bread to dry out to further dry to be used in a French Toast Recipe? Put the bread on a wire rack in a 250-degree oven for 5-10 minutes on each side. Let cool and proceed to make this French toast recipe. Do not “toast” the bread or it will not soak up the batter.

French Toast Recipe for Two

Easy to Use Leftover Sourdough Bread for a French Toast Recipe for Two

We are empty-nesters and cooking breakfast for two is not always easy. When making this recipe for two, just reduce the milk and only use one egg. Adjust the extracts and spices to your taste, we love the extra and we don’t decrease the extracts or spices.

However we love to make our own Homemade Vanilla Extracts that we find very easy and think you should try too!

Or better yet, make a large batch and freeze or refrigerate the rest for later and even enjoy it as a snack! We love crispy French toast sticks. Reheating the sticks in an air-fryer is great too! Read more below!

Crispy French Toast Sticks for a Snack!

Super easy non-soggy French Toast Sticks Recipe

If you want to use any remaining bread to make plenty of French toast for later, simply use the original recipe with 2 eggs and a little extra milk and spices to taste.

French toast is not just for breakfast. The leftover French toast can be made into French toast sticks and heated in the air-fryer and even served as a snack any time of the day.

Sprinkle the sticks with 10x sugar and dip in warmed bowls of melted butter and hot syrup. Even try adding homemade jams and jellies on the sticks instead of syrup. I like to make and heat my jam to make it more liquidy, this makes it easier to dip each French toast stick. 1. I’ll have to try out your method! I know french toast is supposed to be made with stale bread, but my bread doesn’t usually last long enough for it to go stale! I don’t know if you knew this, but in French, french toast translates to “pain perdu”, which means lost bread/old bread. Great post as always!

  2. I do too Katie-it’s getting better in the air-fryer the next day too 🙂 thanks for commenting and stopping by.
