Did you also know that baking soda has a lot of benefits in various fields, such as beauty and cleaning? You can actually enjoy heaps of perks without having to spend a fortune.

It’s so inexpensive, I buy it in bulk and use it in throughout my home. I am not sure how many brands there are out there but I only use Arm and Hammer. It’s a name I trust.

Health Benefits of Using Baking Soda

Stomach Upset and Indigestion

using baking soda for stomach aches

Baking soda can also be used for health reasons. If you have problems with ulcer pain, indigestion, or heartburn, baking soda can help. These health conditions are the result of high stomach acid, so using baking soda will neutralize the acid.

You only need to dissolve a half teaspoon of baking soda in a half glass of filtered water. Drink it once every two to four hours. A word of advice, though.

Don’t consume more than 7 dosages of a half teaspoon of baking soda within 24 hours. If you are over 60 years old, it is recommended not to take more than 3 dosages in a 24 hour period. This is doable for occasional treatment.

If you have a chronic condition, it’s best to see medical advice. Moreover, don’t take too much or you can suffer from acid imbalance. My mother used this her whole life for stomach problems. We never had a chew tablet or pink stuff growing up, this was our only antidote for stomach issues and it really did work.

Acne

Baking soda can help you with your beauty regime. As long as you use real baking soda and not baking powder. There are many ways for you to make use of this great resource.

For a starter, baking soda is good for acne. Instead of pinching or tweaking with your acne, you only need to mix a teaspoon of filtered water with a teaspoon of baking soda. Once it turns into a paste, apply it to your face and massage it in. Before the application, wash your face and dry it lightly by patting it.

After the massage, leave it for 3 minutes and then rinse it with warm water. Afterward, use cool water to wash your face again. Then pat dry. Apply a splash of witch hazel on your face and you will feel a refreshing effect. Your skin will feel tighter and somewhat cleaner. Do it twice a week.

Baking soda is a natural exfoliant that will clean the pores as well as removing dead skin. At the same time, it will also dry out the existing acne and heal it. Not to mention that baking soda has a natural antibacterial trait. Want to learn more about The Amazing Benefits of Witch Hazel, I’ve got that for you in a post!

 Glowing Skin

No matter what skin complexion you have, glowing skin will make you stand out and feel more confident. Glowing skin can make you look younger and fresher. Baking soda can help you with the inexpensive treatment that others pay dearly for.

Facial Mask

face mask with baking soda, orange, and lemon
  • Mix a tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice which has been freshly squeezed
  • Before applying the paste, wash your face first and pat it, but don’t dry it–leave the face a bit damp
  • After the mixture has become a paste; apply it to your face, as if you were using a facial mask
  • Wait 15 minutes for the mask to set it and then wash your face with cool water
  • Apply a splash of witch hazel to firm and tighten your face

Do this only once a week. The combination of baking soda and orange will make your skin glow. Lemon has a little acidic content that will balance out the skin pH level.

Moreover, rich vitamin C will help the skin look lighter and brighter. When it is combined with baking soda’s natural cleansing and exfoliating trait, removing dead skin cells and impurities from the pores will be easy and effortless.

Speaking of lemons, would you like more information on how Lemon Health Benefits, then you should stop by the blog for that, you may be surprised how useful lemons are.

Foot and Toe Fungus

Baking soda has antifungal qualities that can be used to combat athlete’s feet, and toe fungus. Sprinkle about a half cup of baking soda, a few drops of Tea Tree oil into a warm basin of warm to hot water (large enough for both feet). Soak for your feet for 20 minutes, pat dry, spritz with witch hazel.

Would you like to know more about Tea Tree Oil and its Benefits, I have a whole post on that from using it personally!

Healthy Thick Hair

Mix a cup of baking soda with castor oil (20 drops of it) and 3 cups of water. Put the mixture inside a shampoo bottle and use it to replace the shampoo, once a month. When it is time to wash your hair, rinse it out with water and pour the mixture on your scalp. Massage it for several minutes.

After you rinse out the baking soda, (continue with a natural light conditioner-optional). Once the washing process is done, let your hair dry on its own naturally.

This method may work better than your regular shampoo because it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals. It helps to clean the hair while adding volume at the same time. The baking soda won’t remove the natural oils of the hair so you can expect better hair growth.

Sunburn Relief

Baking soda can also be used to treat sunburn. You know how discomforting sunburn can be, right? Read how we relieve sunburn in our home.

  • Add around a half cup of baking soda to lukewarm soaking bathwater
  • When you soak in it, you will feel significant relief
  • When you are out of the tub, let it dry on its own. (Don’t use the towel)
  • I always follow up with a witch hazel spritz
  • For this instance, I put the witch hazel in a spray bottle and put it in the freezer while I am taking my bath
  • Once my bath is complete, I use the ever-so cooling witch hazel to spritz the sunburn areas

You can also use it for a cool relief compress. Mix water and baking soda to make a compress. Directly apply the cool compress to the affected area.

Teeth Whitening

Using baking soda occasionally, for instance, once a week is more than enough to help whiten teeth naturally without commercial products that contain unnatural chemicals. One option for natural teeth whitening is to make a paste and use it in place of toothpaste.

The other option is to wet the toothbrush, use a small amount of toothpaste then sprinkle baking soda on top of the paste and brush normally. Rinse well after using baking soda.

Bad Breath

  • Floss your teeth first
  • Scrape your tongue lightly with a tongue scraper
  • Mix a 1/2 teaspoon with filtered water and swish in the mouth for 5 minutes
  • Follow by brushing the teeth and rinsing with warm water

Baking Soda and Household Uses

Bedbugs

Yes, I know, it’s hard to imagine bedbugs, mites, and such.  I use baking soda and Diatomaceous Earth every single week to sprinkle on my mattress. I have never had bedbugs and I hope I never do.

I feel assured every week using this regiment will prevent them if they ever decided to visit my home. If you do have bedbugs, you will need to seek professional advice about how to rid them once they appear.

General Cleaning

Baking soda is also great for general cleaning. You can mix it with your favorite essential oils to create a soothing effect. Simply sprinkle baking soda on the area and scrub it. If you add essential oils, you can add a potent effect.

For example, tea tree oil or lavender essential oil is known for its great antibacterial trait. This is useful on kitchen counters or high chairs where bacteria tend to be.

Bathroom Cleaner

baking soda and vinegar to clean toilets

In our home, we have 2 toilets and 2 urinals and I use baking soda in them to keep them naturally fresh and clean. Once a week, I sprinkle in the baking soda, spray vinegar on that and let it foam! This naturally deodorizes and cleans better than any toxic foaming cleaner.

If you make a mixture of baking soda with pure apple cider vinegar, you can clean stubborn stains, especially in the bathroom appliances, floors, and grout

Kitchen Uses

For instance, if you want a drain cleaner, simply sprinkle the baking soda first inside the drain and then add the apple cider vinegar. Let it for around 15 minutes and then pour hot water down the drain.

Baked on Pans

Mixing baking soda with hot water, soak your baked-on cooking pans or pots for around 15 minutes before washing them off the regular way. This method can be quite effective to remove stubborn stains. Your cooking pans and pots will be spotless like new again.

Natural Oven Cleaner

Baking soda is an alternative to toxic oven cleaners. This is my method to clean my electric oven, read your manual before you proceed with cleaning your oven.

  • Clean as much food and particles as possible from the stove area including the glass door
  • Pre-heat oven to 200 then turn off
  • Use our Farmhouse BC veggie soap as the “water” called for in this outline
  • Make a paste of approximately 1/2 to 1/3 cup soapy water mixed with 3-4 tablespoons baking soda (I never measure)
  • Rub or use a small paintbrush or toothbrush to apply the paste
  • Close the door for 30 minutes
  • Spray the whole area with vinegar
  • Let this sit 30 minutes
  • Use warm water to wipe away the dirt and grime
  • Dry and follow-up with filtered water and a microfiber cloth to dry

Refrigerator Deodorizer

I have a cute penguin that I like to fill with baking soda to naturally deodorize my fridge. I have also made grain-sack bags and filled them with baking soda and placed them also in the fridge. They tend to get dirtier than the penguin which is easier to clean.

Clean Fruits and Vegetables Naturally

Read it How to clean vegetables and fruit naturally, how to use baking soda to clean fruits and veggies naturally along with FBC veggie soap. Baking soda gives a natural grit for scrubbing the dirt off produce.

In conclusion

Sodium bicarbonate is also known as baking soda and has tons of benefits and usages. Check out what Wiki says about Sodium Bicarbonate! I could literally keep writing for the next hour on how many uses there are for baking soda.

Baking soda can help balance out the pH level. If it’s mixed with an alkaline or acid substance, it will neutralize the substance. That’s why it is pretty useful to neutralize acidic odors or to boost the detergent’s power in your laundry.

It can also be used as a safe scrub because of its gentle abrasive ability. It can be used to neutralize, deodorize, and also clean without creating a toxic effect.

Basically, baking soda is your go-to product that can produce the desired cleaning effect without the toxic risks. When compared to commercial products, baking soda isn’t only cheaper but also safer (and also more natural).

This natural wonder is number one in my book and in my home! How do you use baking soda? Have you any uses that you could share that aren’t mentioned here, we’d love to hear your uses and ideas?
