12 Wondrous Gardening Tips for Beginners

12 wonderous gardening tips for beginners are for everyone at any level in gardening! Gardening is very rewarding; whether you live in the countryside, the city, or in the suburbs. You can enjoy homegrown vegetables; organic gardening is the best.

As a beginner, perhaps the most important advice you can get is to start small. The worst thing that can happen is to bite off more than you can chew. Hopefully, these gardening tips for beginners will help in areas that may be holding you back from starting a garden this year.

Other Gardening Tips for Beginners

There are so many other things that must be factored into your garden set up such as the amount of sunlight available, the surrounding vegetation and plants, soil conditions, and the available water source. But let us assume you already have your site and you are ready to go. Hopefully, these tips can help you whether you are a beginner gardener or an advanced one.

Gardening Tips, Hacks, and Ideas

There’s never an end to all the new things you can try in your garden in the quest for more harvest for less effort. Any tip, trick, or hack that saves you some time, stress, or helps you efficiently use your resources is worth considering especially if you are a beginner in gardening. In this article, we will be looking at some of the most interesting gardening hacks that will help elevate your game.

Use A Rake Handle For Measuring

Rake to measure in length when starting a garden.

It can get really frustrating to take measurements on your garden with the usual flexible measuring tape. It is important to take proper measurements such as spacing when planting. You must find an efficient way to get this necessary task done. Often times, you are without help and will need methods for the lone gardener.

You can mark off specific distances on the wooden part of any long wooden handle tool you frequently use in your garden such as a rake. This way, you can quickly place the wooden part of this tool on the ground when you want to take measurements.

Being a solid tool, it is also easier to place it on the ground and get accurate straight measurements. I like to use a permanent paint marker to ensure it stays on longer. Using tape is not my preferred method, dirt gets in it, it interferes with the grip and doesn’t stay on the longest versus using a permanent marker.

Rake Safety Tips

Remember to place the prongs facing down. Ask me why? It only takes one time stepping on a rake that hits you in the face to make you aware never to do that again.

Preparing for a Forecasted Frost When Gardening

If you get a forecast for an impending frost at night and you wish to protect your seedlings from harm, you can purchase little terracotta pots with small holes at the base. Turn this pot upside down and use it to cover the seedlings overnight. This will act as a warm jacket that protects your seedlings during the frost.

Don’t forget to take them off during the day so the seedlings can get the sunlight they need to grow. With modern technologies, like asking Alexa, “what’s the weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow”,  you will always know, even while in bed with the lights off!

Dealing with Aphids and Pests in the Vegetable Garden

If you garden organically, (hopefully, you do) the chances are very high that you deal with a lot of aphids on your plants. Some gardeners pick these aphids off with their bare hands and others use a jet of water from a hose to wash them off the plants. These methods are very time consuming and inefficient.

One way to efficiently go about this is to make use of sticky tape. Wrap some tape around your hands such that the sticky end is facing outwards. With your sticky taped hands, you can simply clean off the aphids from the plants in simple big swoops.

The aphids will all stick to the sticky end of the tape. You should concentrate on the underside of leaves as this is where they are usually most concentrated.

Aphids on plants must be removed.

How to Give Seeds a Fast Track Germination

Some seeds like peas have a hard outer coating and this makes it a lot harder to germinate when planted in the soil. You can get a head start by soaking these kinds of seeds in lukewarm filtered water overnight before planting the next day. Using filtered water is a good idea. Don’t forget the moonflower seeds, they definitely could use a good soaking before planting.

Seed soaking is faster way to start the germination process when gardening.

Plant Vertical for Limited Space

This tip is especially useful for those who have a small garden and have to make do with the little space available. You can plant varieties of vegetables that will grow vertically or trail upwards. All you have to do is provide them with vertical frameworks upon which they can twist and turn as they grow vertically.

Small spaces doesn't make it impossible to garden, vertical gardening is easy.

If you have a little more expertise, you can also install vertical planters on your walls where you can plant different seeds at different layers vertically on your wall. This is a lot more complex. There are vertical kits to buy and you can read about growing Vertical Gardens For Small Spaces on my blog.

Use Cinnamon Powder on Seedlings to Prevent Diseases

Sprinkling cinnamon on seedlings prevents diseases.

Seedling diseases are a very common yet deadly issue that affects most gardens. Most times when your seedlings are infected with a disease, you begin to notice a grey-white fungus at the stems of your seedlings just at the point where they make contact with the soil mix.

With a cinnamon powder, you are introducing some anti-fungal qualities to help fight these diseases and as an added bonus, it smells lovely. All cinnamon are basically the same, so shopping at the dollar stores will save you money on this detail.

An Easy Way to Ward Off Snails with Crushed Eggshells

Snails and other soft-bodied pests can wreak havoc on your vegetable garden. You can create a barrier around your garden with cracked eggshells, my Many Uses For Eggshells blog helps you make your own eggshell powder. With this barrier in place, snails find it impossible to crawl their way into your garden.

Check out my blog on the benefits of Diatomaceous Earth for fleas and other uses for Natural Living and how it can relate to your everyday life and with gardening.

Digital Gardening Tools

This is the digital age and you can get assistance from apps for just about anything. Gardening is not left out in this regard. You can make use of gardening software to help plan what you’re going to grow and where.

With good planning, you can eliminate the risk of losing plants by sowing at the wrong time, faulty spacing, or failing to rotate crops to reduce the likelihood of soil-borne pests and diseases from one year to the next.

Software or apps also help you with succession planting so you can quickly see areas where gaps can appear and what plants are ready to fill those gaps. This helps you get as much food from all of the space available to you.

Mother Earth News has one that I have considered. Interested in some neat garden labels? I posted a blog, Glass Pebble Magnets, Crafts, and More that you could make with my Veggie Template and Herb Template.

Gardening Tips for Beginners Advise

The tips, tricks, and hacks mentioned and discussed above are by no means exhaustive. You can always research more ways to ensure you get the maximum output from your gardens. You can customize different ideas into methods that are most suited to your garden. With experience, you gradually perfect your process and get the best yields.

The best advice……is just to start. Buy flower seeds from the dollar store, a bag of soil, and plant the seeds. If the spring has passed, sow directly in the ground. Small children will benefit from being introduced to gardening; it’s a good way for them to learn and hopefully will continue into their adult life.

Don’t forget about your elderly loved ones. Having a garden in containers is a nice way for them to have an easy way to care for plants. I am sure this gesture will bring joy to their lives! I have created a playlist of all my gardening videos on my YouTube channel, check that out by clicking the video and then the GARDENING playlist here!

Easy Hanging Flower Baskets To Make

Once you get more familiar with gardening, consider making hanging basket gardens. I have a fun post Hanging Flower Baskets From The Dollar Tree if you don’t have space or time for a garden. With these hanging baskets, if you love birds and butterflies, you can add some treats in them so that the birds and butterflies will stay flying around your home.

Taking Caution in Gardening

A final word of caution, please check if any plants are poisonous or harmful to bees, animals, or children. A fence does not always guarantee they won’t get out.

  • Please ensure any weed prevention or fertilizer is safe for bees, animals, and the environment. My blog Fish Emulsion Fertilizer, How To Make and Use is a great natural fertilizer to use as discussed.
  • Keep seeds out of little hands and animals. Some seeds are coated with a toxic preventative.
  • Ensuring rakes and shovels are faced down when outside. When done, rinse off and dry before putting it away for the next time.
  • If you compost, like myself, ensure not to add toxic plants or weeds to your compost. Making Compost Naturally Into Garden Soil is a blog I wrote that will give you the information needed to understand the outcome if you do. I have living worms in my compost. I definitely do not want weeds or toxic plants in their compost.

My blog Drying Herbs 101 is perfect for people who are interested in growing and drying their own herbs. Start planting, it’s so rewarding, good for the environment, and satisfying.
