Southern Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Southern sweet potato pie, Autumn pie, New England pie, no matter what you call it, it’s a damn good pie! I can say that I actually love sweet potato pie more than pumpkin pie. Even though they are close in taste and texture. Mostly, due to the fact that it’s easier to prepare than pumpkins.

How to Prepare Sweet Potatoes for Pie

  • Wash the potatoes with veggie soap
  • The link will be in the shop section from our personal collection of dish, cleaning, hand, and veggie soap. I will be using the Instant Pot for this recipe.
  • I have a whole detailed blog post on how to clean produce naturally using our veggie soap.
  • Cook, bake, steam or pressure cook the sweet potatoes to your preference
  • Put enough water in the Instant pot per manufacturer’s suggestions (If using one)
  • Place the unpeeled and washed sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot  
  • How long will depend on the size of the yams?
  • Cook for 15 minutes on manual high
  • Remove the yams and let cool
  • If you mix the hot yams with the eggs, it will curdle the eggs 

Sometimes, if I do not plan on using the cooked yams on the same day, they are put in a Weck jar, unpeeled, and refrigerated until the next day. I don’t peel nor rice them until the last step when making the pie, so they don’t turn black.

Ingredients for 9-inch Southern Sweet Potato Pie

9 inch sweet potato pie
  • 1 ¾ cups cooked sweet potato or approximately 438 grams
  • ½ cup white organic unrefined sugar or 100 grams
  • ½ cup brown or sugar in the raw 110 grams
  • 3 eggs room temperature 
  • ½ teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1 ½ cups milk or 360 grams *
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon or less to your preference
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves (optional)**
  • 1 tablespoon butter or Ghee, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1-9” unbaked pie crust

*you may substitute half and half, evaporated milk, watered down yogurt, or whey for the milk

** omit the cloves if you want a milder flavor than a traditional pumpkin pie

Directions to Make Southern Sweet Potato Pie

  • Peel and rice cooled yams using a potato ricer
  • Add all the ingredients to a bowl
  • Beat all the ingredients well-this step is very important
  • Wash and clean the eggshells for recycling, and composting

I used an antique hand beater and one bowl for this whole pie. Don’t be afraid of over beating this if you look at my picture you will actually see little air pockets. There is nothing wrong with air pockets it just makes it a little more fluffy than normal. Beat the eggs and sugar and other ingredients until combined well.

How to Bake a Sweet Potato Pie

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Ingredients mixed well
  • Pour in an unbaked pie crust
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes depending on your oven
  • Remove to a cooling rack to cool completely
  • Store in a refrigerator
  • Serving with whipped topping is optional, but oh so good

Homemade Whipped Cream Topping

If you would like to see and learn more about homemade whipped cream topping, head over to the post and video. Here is where it may get controversial. To chill or not to chill the bowl and beater? The colder all the equipment and ingredients are the better the end product will be.

Next comes the cream. Heavy whipping cream or heavy cream. Again, a preference, and each one is slightly different. Not much, in my opinion, I use whatever I have on hand. I usually have raw milk that I skimmed off the cream and I will use that. Let’s begin to make my version of whipped cream.

Ingredients for the Homemade Whipped Cream Topping

  • 1 to 1/2 cups of heavy cream or whipping cream (cold is a must here)
  • 2-4 tablespoons up to 1/2 to 3/4 cup of confectionary sugar (pre-sifted is best)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of the best vanilla extract
  • (optional) 1 teaspoon of maple syrup
  • A dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
  • This will yield approximately 3 cups of whipped cream

Directions for Making Whipped Cream Topping

Beat the cream on high and do NOT walk away. Did you know that there are literally seconds between perfect whipped cream for the topping and homemade butter? What? Ask me how I know? You only need to do this once to not forget! My kids thought it was cool but not so when I offered butter on their pie! lol.

Desserts to Eat Whipped Cream On

We never need an excuse to consume anything with the delicious creamy whipped cream topping! Even a good cup of Joe will benefit from a dollop of this heavenly stuff. Speaking of coffee and breakfast, I can’t even think of eating sourdough waffles without some homemade whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon on top!

Starbucks coffee-inspired chocolate cake-no eggs really love a good dollop of the whipped cream topic. Not only is homemade whip cream well on the cake, but I also did a blog on super moist pound cake from scratch that really melts in your mouth with the balance of whipped cream.
