Types of Beans Used in a Sloppy Joe Recipe?
There are two choices for using beans in this sloppy Joe recipe. One is to use dry (Northern) navy beans, by soaking and then cooking them for 30 minutes before proceeding with the recipe. That method will be a whole new post on how to cook dry beans.
The other method we are using today will be using canned pork and beans. The beans are cooked and ready to use in making bison sloppy Joe’s.
What Types of Peppers to Use for Sloppy Joe?
For this recipe, I did not add extra peppers and they are not required. But, if using fresh hot peppers, go with a little less, you can always kick up the heat later by adding chili powder, Tabasco sauce, or other spices.
I make my sloppy Joe with just a little heat by using a dry spice and Ray will add a hot sauce if he wants more heat while eating this.
What Type of Onions for Making Sloppy Joe Recipe?
The onions I use for this recipe can be yellow or white onion. The onion is diced very small as I always do with onions and peppers and sautéed with Ghee before adding the meat.
Yellow onions work well with this recipe. I will use fermented red onions if I am out of yellow onions but not until the very end of cooking sloppy Joe’s.
Dried minced and onion powder will work too in this recipe. I know plenty of people that don’t have onions in their pantry and use dried herbs and spices.
What Spices to Use for a Sloppy Joe Recipe?
Garam Masala is a favorite spice for sloppy Joe, not much needed for flavor in this quick and easy recipe. Take a read at my post How to Make and Use Garam Masala is used and how many spices go into making it. This is such a versatile spice; I always have it in my pantry that I make myself.
