How to Wash Silk

The safest method to wash 100% silk is to handwash the silk. Usually, the garment tag will recommend “Professionally Dry Clean” but I have always hand-washed silk ties and never encountered a problem.

  • Fill a basin with lukewarm water
  • Swish FBC veggie soap
  • Let sit 15 minutes
  • Rinse with cool water
  • Hang to dry

How to Get Wrinkles Out of Silk Ties

  • Soak the tie in warm water
  • Place on an ironing board, right side down
  • Use a pressing cloth and iron (cool to warm setting)
  • A commercial steamer is another option to remove wrinkles out of silk

Steps to Removing Seams From Silk Ties

Use a seam ripper or a rotary blade at an angle while pulling on the seam to remove the threads. Iron with the setting on silk and use a pressing cloth.

Ensure you don’t hold the iron too long in one place. Iron from the backside of the tie. It is recommended not to use spray water while ironing as water-stains may appear.

Trace Patterns to Cut Out Shapes

Trace and cut out a pattern for the shape you would like to cut out the silk tie. If possible, make a clear stencil pattern in order to audition the pattern. This was especially helpful in the butterfly pattern to ensure the veins were incorporated in the pattern.

Remember, the image will be a mirrored image when ironed down.

  • Hand draw patterns or use a
  • Die-cutting machine

  1. Take the tie apart at the seams

Adhering Silk Patterns to Linen Blocks is easy with the steps.
  1. Audition where all the pieces will go before sewing
  2. Cut (9) 6” x 6” squares of linen or cotton fabric for a wall-hanging
  3. Iron on the pieces backed with interfacing (according to manufacture directions) to each linen block
  4. Sew any decorative patterns that will fit inside the 6” block with a blanket stitch or a zig-zag stitch
  5. Sew all the blocks together
  6. Iron open the seams
