Natural Dish Soap and How to Use It

Natural dish soap, what is that? Saponified organic unrefined coconut oil, using lye, filtered water, and essential oils if making scented soap. Unscented natural dish soap consists of the same ingredients except for the essential oils. All of the ingredients we use in our natural dish soaps are all-natural, creating an all-natural, vegan-friendly bar of soap. When creating natural soap, it must contain lye, a liquid (usually water or milk), and oils.

Our Business Cares

The most popular “liquid stuff” in bottles for dishes is a detergent and not a real-in-the-sense soap. It cleans like soap, yes, but it’s a chemically made detergent. Wouldn’t you prefer to use all-natural dish soap and know you are helping the environment? Our natural dish soap is the perfect soap for you!

My History of Making Natural Dish Soap

I have been making all kinds of soaps (mostly bath soaps) for over 25 years now. Unfortunately, there are too many different types of skins and conditions to make one universal type of soap to meet everyone’s needs. It takes a lot of inventory to store and to purchase to make each batch of soap.

I have decided to create a soap that will fit everyone’s needs; natural dish soap that can be for cleaning dishes and used as all-purpose cleaning soap.

How to Use the Big Stick Soap Bar

  1.  Fill a basin with warm to hot water
  2.  Swish the soap stick in the basin of water for approximately 10 to 15 seconds or
  3.  Hold the stick under the stream of water as it’s filling the basin
  4.  Personally, I like to soap up my hands and hand wash the items, and rinse in the basin of soapy water
  5.  If you prefer a lot of soap bubbles (which is not essential for cleaning power) you may lather up a washcloth or eco-friendly sponge
  6. Pat dry the soap
  7. Hang-up the soap to dry or place in a well-draining dish for soaps
  8. For your next use, wet the washcloth and it will be ready with the soap residue already on it

Multi-purpose Uses for Dish Soap

Cleaning counters, high chairs, stoves, and more are easy by just swishing the bar of soap in water. Again, you may want to lather up a washcloth or sponge for extra soap bubbles. I find it is not necessary to have soap bubbles and water to clean. Bubbles do not clean, the soap water does!

Using natural soap for gardeners hands

Did you know this natural dish soap is good for removing dirt and grease off your gardening hands or mechanic hands? It can also remove fish and onion smells from your skin.

Our natural dish soap is a necessity for cleaning, but I also have a blog on Non-Toxic Cleaners is also a natural cleaner. Be sure to check it out!

Grating Soap into Soap Flakes

Many times, I will grate a whole bar of soap like grating cheese.  This makes it easy for sprinkling a few flakes in a pail or basin of warm to hot water for cleaning or mopping.  I admit I like using my antique nut grinder to grate the soap! The flakes can be placed in toilet bowls and urinals for cleaning, thus keeping the regular bar of soap sanitary.

Vegan-Friendly Stain Stick in the Laundry Room

Directions for stubborn laundry stains

  1. Blot as much of the stain as possible with a cotton cloth
  2. Add cool water over the stain
  3. Wet the stained area with FBC vegan-friendly unscented soap
  4. (Optional) sprinkle baking soda and spritz with vinegar (check your label for care and color bleeding)
  5. Let sit 15 minutes
  6. Wash as usual

Baking soda is a wonderful tool for cleaning so many things. I have a whole blog post on “Baking Soda Benefits and Uses“, be sure and check that out!

Scented or Unscented Bar of Soap

This unscented big stick bar of soap is just as wonderful as the ones made with essential oils. The unscented, natural dish soap can clean your fruits and vegetables without imparting an essential oil taste. If you are not partial to a strong scent or essential oil‘s then the unscented big stick is just right for you.

How are the Dish Soaps Made?

All soaps are made in very small batches of 6 at a time. Each one is hand-crafted and stamped individually. By making small batches, ensures the ability to reduce errors and ensure the soaps are made with good quality control.

The dish, cleaning, and hand soap stick made is using the cold process method. The cold process method means it is used with filtered water that is mixed with lye which is mixed with 90° temperature oil.  When the oil and the lye are mixed together, saponification happens.  Through the saponification, all the lye is dissipated and turned into a wonderful bar of soap that does not have any traces of lye or oil in it after 24 hours.

After 24 hours the pH level is around 11. Once the soap cures, anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, the pH level is approximately 7- 8 which is equivalent to the standard body bar on the market.

Questions By Customers on Natural Dish Soap

The soap is made with coconut oil, will it hurt my pipes, septic or gray water?

No, it will not. The soap is no longer full of oil, it has saponified into an all-natural soap. Every real soap in the world has to have oil and lye in it to be a real soap. The oil is no longer an oil but rather a cleaning soap. If using our soaps indoors and have a cistern for gray water, it is perfectly ready to water the garden, plants, or lawn.

How long will this bar of soap last?

This answer depends, obviously, on how much and how often you use it. The average bar will last a surprisingly very long time. Especially, if you hang it to dry or keep it out of standing water. Since this bar is all-natural it does not have preservatives and hardeners in it to preserve it.

The best way I have found to make the bar last is to always “dry” or pat dry with a dry washcloth. By doing this the bar will be dry, the scent will last longer and the next time you need a soapy dishcloth, you will have one ready without having to wet the soap again. Just wet the dishcloth that you dried the soap with, it will become soapy once wet.

It’s a natural soap, can I wash my body with it?

We do not advertise it, however, family and other customers have been made it their daily body wash soap for years.

My soap has fragrance in it what is that from?

If your soap has a scent that means a pure-grade essential oil was used. We do NOT use synthetic fragrances.

Why is the scent so strong?

We have greatly reduced the essential oils used in our recipe over the last 25 years to a 50% reduction.  While some customers state that it is still too strong other customers have complained it is too faint.  If we reduce it anymore, it will be fruitless to add it.

Our recommendation, if you do not like a strongly scented soap, to purchase the unscented or called veggie wash soap.

Is your dish soap vegan-friendly?

Yes, all our dish soaps are vegan-friendly. Ingredients are filtered water, unrefined organic coconut oil, essential oil (if not unscented), and lye which is saponified during the soap process.

Why does my dish soap sometimes have a crack in it?

The more the soap dries and cures a natural crack or hairline may occur.  This will, in no way harm your soap or indicate that it is too old to use.

Will the soap still work if it gets old?

Yes, I have used soaps from 10 years ago that are just as lathering as the day I made them; the scent had dissipated, but the soap still works very well.

I want a fragrance not listed; can you make custom scents?

We used to do this, but we no longer offer this option. Some essential oils are difficult to find and purpose.

I noticed a greasy ring in the basin, is that normal or is that grease from the soap?

Yes, it’s very normal. The grease is from the dirty dishes not from the bar of soap.  To clean this greasy film, take the bar of soap and run it around the inside of the dirty basin. Rinse with warm water and it will come out squeaky clean.

When you take a bath, don’t you always have a greasy ring around the edges that need to be cleaned? I know our family does. This is the same concept, the dishes, like your body, get clean while the dirt and grime affixes to the outer edge of the sink/bathtub.

This is not like the blue stuff in plastic bottles?

No, it is not. There is no plastic bottle, chemicals, and dyes. Our soaps can clean oil off ducks too, natural with no bottle to pollute the landfill, just saying!

You do NOT need to see actual bubbles for the soap to work. That is a myth and a sales tactic for the commercial maker of cleaning products to get the consumer to use more and more.

I ordered 2 alike soaps, what is the bag made out of?

They are placed without any paper packaging and placed in a cotton muslin bag. The bag is hand-washable and reusable as in when buying bulk items at the natural food stores, for instance.

How many scents or varieties do you have for the dish soap?

Ingredients: saponified (lye), unrefined coconut oil and essential oil (not unscented), filtered water
Citronella-on list to be discontinued
 Lavender
 Lemongrass
 Unscented or a veggie wash
 Patchouli-Cedarwood
 Citronella-Eucalyptus-Rosemary
Limited seasonal dish soaps
Sweet Orange-Spearmint
Blood Orange-Peppermint
Cedar-Pine
Mixed Oranges-Tea Tree Oil

How do you package your soaps for shipping?

We place the soap in a food-grade baggie. This paper baggie is biodegradable and is NOT plastic. The invoice is from recycled paper. The shipping envelope is from recycled paper. We do not use any form of plastic in our packaging. When purchasing 3 bars of soaps or more, we use a USPS Flat Rate Box that is made from cardboard.

FAQ About Natural Dish Soap

What is the best natural dish soap?

All-natural, vegan-friendly dish, hand, and cleaning soap.

We believe, alongside our customers, that our natural dish soap is the best. Not only is it made with organic, natural, vegan friendly products, our packaging is also eco-friendly and sustainable. This allows for more recycling and products effecting our environment in a harmful way.

Is Dawn dish soap natural?

Liquid Dawn is a detergent, not a soap. To get the color, they add dyes and the smell is also a synthetic fragrance that is not natural. They also use plastic which is harmful to our environment.

Can you wash your body with dish soap?

Although we do not advertise washing the body with our natural dish soap, it does not mean it can not be done. Majority of our customers and some family members state that our soap is all they use for their body and it does not dry out their skin.

I would love to see a video or two done demonstrating how powerful your wonderful soap really is. Highly recommended!

  4. As many customers have replied to this, it could be your water. Yes, it will leave spots as it doesn’t have a chemical spot remover. It’s pure soap. This sounds like it could be you have soft/hard water. A little goes a long way. Bubbles don’t need to clean. The soap will do that even if swished in a basin of water. Natural soap is totally different from chemical cleaners. Some users can not adapt and others can learn to. Try using way less soap and drying the dishes and see if that helps. The spots don’t bother our family, we can wipe them off any anytime, but we usually don’t.
