Hanging flower basket from the Dollar Tree can be made with just 2 wire baskets and 2 coconut fillers! Dollar Tree wire baskets are used for many craft ideas too. But for this project, we will be making a sphere hanging flower basket using both baskets for one hanger. This type of planter is used many times for strawberry plants.

Hanging Flower Basket Recycled
Once the season is over, I leave the hanging flower basket outside under the garden roof for the birds to pick at the natural coconut fibers to build their nests in the spring.
Once the summer comes, compost the coconut fiber shells and reuse the wire baskets all over again! You will just need to buy new coconut fiber inserts and flowers to have that beautiful hanging flower basket again this summer!

Steps to Make the Hanging Flower Basket
Hanging flower basket from the Dollar Tree can be made with just 2 wire baskets and 2 coconut fillers
Total Time: 30 minutes
Step 1
Tape the inside (halfway) with duct tape of one coconut liner (the top of the basket)
Step 2
Add the other basket to the top of the tape, push the tape so it is secure
Step 3
Find center of the top liner and cut a large X
Step 4
Secure the two pieces together so the tape sticks to both liners
Step 5
Reach in and from the inside and pull the bottom tape up to meet the top piece
Step 6
Apply several pieces of duct tape to the bottom of the pipe and one loose piece at the top as a cover (this will be removed later)
Step 7
Adhere to the bottom of the PVC pipe with a piece of tape to anchor the pipe in the basket
Step 8
Place the watering tube (PVC pipe) in the center of the inside of the basket then put the planter in the basket for stability
Step 9
Fill the whole planter with good potting soil, leaving the tape on the top of the watering tube so no dirt debris gets in the pipe
Step 10
Make slits in the sides (near the top) for the larger hanging plants
Step 11
Gently squeeze the plant’s root ball to fit in the hole, but do not snip any of the plant’s roots
Step 12
Add the hanger to both wire baskets and then remove the tape off the top of the watering tube
Step 13
Water through the watering tube immensely until the water drains from the bottom
Estimated Cost: 05.00 USD

Deadheading Flowers to Keep the Planter Fresh
- Push a finger in the hole to close the coconut fiber around the plant to hold it in
- Periodically, this may have to be done
- Dead-head any dead flowers and discard them in the compost pile
How to Water and Fertilize a Hanging Flower Basket
Use a good fertilizer, weekly mixed in a watering can to easily water the hanging flower basket. Water daily using the PVC pipe in the top until the water runs out the bottom of the planter. Keep the coconut fibers opening covered or closed shut so the roots don’t dry out.
In Conclusion to a Hanging Flower Basket
It’s so much fun to make these sphere hanging baskets using Dollar Tree hangers and coco fibers inserts. The PVC tubing is my secret weapon to keeping the plants watered properly. Mix it up, grow strawberries in one basket, and cascading flowers in another for a variety of visuals in your home this year.
