Open hearth, woodstove, Instant Pot, or stove-top method will work for this easy applesauce recipe. Applesauce without sugar is an option too.

How to make applesauce from scratch
- Sort very bad apples
- Wash apples with vegetable soap and rinse well
- Core apples and remove
- Slice into wedges, do not peel
- 12-14 apples add 1 cup of organic unpasteurized apple cider to a large kettle
- 1 cup of unpasteurized apple cider (more later if necessary)
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (per quart of applesauce is recommended)
- (I did not add lemon juice especially in a copper or a brass kettle)
- Cook until tender
- Mash, puree, or mix with a stick blender to the consistency you prefer
- Add ¼ of organic, pure cane sugar (optional) per quart of applesauce (1/2 cup for this recipe)
- Extra apple cider may be used if too dry
- 1 teaspoon organic cinnamon (optional)
- Store into hot, sterilized freezer-safe canning jars
- Let cool completely before freezing

How long does homemade applesauce last?
- If not processed in a canner, up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator once opened
- Water-bath method and canned, up to one year
- The frozen method, 9 months to one year
Is applesauce made from apples?
Applesauce is made from a single type or a variety of apples. To make a fall harvest version of homemade applesauce from scratch, try adding cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of cloves. Chunky or superfine is optional to your taste and likes.
What apples make the best applesauce?
Most varieties will work for applesauce. Try pairing sweet and tart apples for unique applesauce. The best apples are not required to make applesauce, in fact, less than perfect apples are recommended to make applesauce from scratch.

What makes brown applesauce?
Applesauce will likely turn brown because of the oxidation that takes place; caused by exposure to air. To prevent apples from turning brown when exposed to air; lemon juice is recommended. I do not use lemon juice in my applesauce, but that is my preference.
