Easy apple pie jam is just what it sounds like, apple pie but in a jam. Homemade apple jelly and jams recipes are a great place for learning how to can.
Canning for beginners should start with an easy jelly recipe like this one. Healthy recipes can be achieved by controlling the ingredients that go into your foods.
Since we are empty-nesters, we like to make small batches of things. The jam recipe will yield 5 half-pint jars of apple pie jam. We had one small Weck jar filled with the leftovers that weren’t enough to fill a half-pint jar.

Tools Needed for Apple Pie Jam
Many years ago, I purchased a copper apple butter kettle from South Carolina on an antique road trip. I definitely use that pan for apple butter too!
An OXO vegetable dicer was used in this recipe, it makes the apples all uniform in size, which I prefer. But use whatever method works for you. Even an-old-fashion peel and knife will suffice.

What Types are Apples are Best for Making Jam/Jelly?
Making apple pie jam is so easy. Start with juicy apples. I honestly use any pie or applesauce apples. I get apples fresh, locally, right off the tree from a nearby apple orchard. Apple Valley Orchards are located near Cleveland, TN. if you are local to the area!
Here are some suggested apples to use for making jams and jellies: Fuji, McIntosh, Pink Lady, Cortland, and more can be used.

Ingredients for Apple Pie Jam (Revised)
- 6 cups apples (around 7 medium-sized apples)
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (no bottle “stuff” used here) **
- ¼ teaspoon finely ground allspice
- 1 heaping teaspoon best cinnamon (less if you like)
- 1 teaspoon butter (cuts down on the foam) omit if you choose
- 3 1/2 cups (700 grams) white organic cane sugar
- ¾ cup brown sugar (200 grams) we use sugar in the raw
- 1 box Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin (1/3 cup if bought in bulk)
- 1 cup fresh apple cider (not cider vinegar)
- 1/4 cup filtered water
It may seem like a lot of sugar. I have used less before and it does work well with 3 cups of sugar but may not be as thick. I am not familiar with artificial sweeteners or Stevia or how they will affect the jam if you so choose to use them in this apple pie jam recipe.
** Lemon Health Benefits can be read in a post I wrote several years ago.
Directions for Making Apple Pie Jam
- If using the water bath canner, now is the time to get that pot of water boiling since it will take some time to boil.
- Place all ingredients in the pot EXCEPT the sugar, which will go in after a boil
- Boil to a full rolling boil, one which will not stop boiling when stirred
- Stir constantly to prevent sticking
- Add all the sugar at once, constantly stirring
- Return to a full rolling boil; boil and stir for one full minute
- Remove from heat
- Fill jars within 1/8 inch from the top of the jars
- The jelly should “sheet” at this point or adding a little to a cold plate should show it to have “jelled”
- Wipe the rim clean with a white lint-free cotton or linen towel
Proceed to the Waterbath Method
- Water-bath the jam-half pints 10 minutes, pints 15 minutes
- Remove after the time is up, place upside down on a wooden canning rack for 10 minutes
- After 10 minutes revert to right-side up and let cool
- Once cook, remove the outer rings and ensure the “button” on the lid is down, if not place in the refrigerator and consume within a few months
Canning Apple Pie Jam
A water bath canner is recommended. Directions on how to water bath can be found in Water Bath Canning, please follow the directions to ensure safety standards are met.
After the water bath procedure, invert the jars upside down for a minute or two on a wooden canning/cooling rack and flip the jars over causing them to self-seal.
After 4 hours check to confirm the lid is pressed down and does not pop up. If not sealed, either put in a water bath again or put in the refrigerator for future use.
Never store a canned good in the pantry if the “button” is popped up and not sealed.
How to Store Jams and Jellies
It is best to store all canned goods in a cool, dry, and dark place. I have had my jams and jelly last an entire year without any issues. Always check for mold and foul smells before using any canned goods.
Don’t forget what a wonderful gift these little jars are heaven to your friends and family.
Using Apple Pie Jam in Desserts
I use apple pie jam for almost anything besides just toast. If I have a Phyllo Crust, I add a jar of jam, brush the crust with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar, and dessert is made! Making little pie crusts and filling with the jam is excellent served warm with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

I made apple pie jam last night for a recipe blog share with some new blogging friends and had the bowl scrapings in homemade vanilla ice cream. If you want to know How to Make an Eggless Homemade Ice Cream, you will find a blog and video tutorial.

In Conclusion for Making Apple Pie Jam
Making apple pie jam is something I look forward to every fall! Just the thought of making this scrupulous jar of heaven makes me ache for the fall-time again! This is a great beginner recipe if you want to start making jams and jellies.
Would you like to make your own wooden canning/cooling rack with and without power tools options? The full blog and video can be found DIY Heavy-duty canning and cooling rack.
This wooden canning and cooling rack will be able to handle a full canning bath of water and not sag nor falter. Great for hot jars, the wood will not cause the jars to crack from a temperature change in another type of rack.
