Easy DIY Camera Mount Ceiling Track Installation

Easy DIY camera mount ceiling track installation was not an easy task in the beginning. We had no idea what we needed. Overhead camera track in my new blogging room was an afterthought! A few months ago, I started creating videos (which has been 2 years now). 

All the tripods, wires, and accessories were very overwhelming. I needed to accommodate a solution to eliminating many of these unnecessary clutters and trip-hazards!

An Overhead Stationary Camera System

Are you creating videos positioned in one place? Then, this overhead stationary system could be for you. DIY videos, a cooking channel, and creators that will be creating videos in the same spot and the camera does not have to be moved would benefit from this track mount.

This camera mount track installation is for overhead, over-the-shoulder, and straight-down shots.   If I need to adjust the track to a different angle it is very easy to adjust the camera and or the iPhone. I have a bracket for each one.  The overhead track allows for positions and views and shots that the tripod just cannot get.

Installing Ceiling Camera Mount Tracks on Different Types of Ceilings

We installed the camera mount track on a wood tongue and groove ceiling. For other types of ceilings, you will have to find the ceiling joists or use sheetrock anchors and adjust the materials needed.

Drop Ceilings

Great news for a drop ceiling dwelling, they actually have camera mount systems that you do not have to use the tracks for. The downside, they are stationary and you will not be able to reposition them along a track.

Difficulty Installing the Camera Ceiling Mount System

We did not find it difficult to install this overhead camera track. The best advice I could give would be to map it all out on a piece of paper with all the dimensions. Preplan where the holes will go, how many screws you need.

Materials for the Ceiling Camera Mount Systems

We could not find all the pieces that we needed in one place. We bought some from Amazon, McMaster Carr, and Ace Hardware. In the video, we will show you what we used for the two areas in our blogging room ceiling.

One is positioned over a 6-foot table in the center of the room and the other is positioned in an area that is over the cook woodstove.

Commercial LED lights are installed and I am able to film at midnight and I do not need extra lighting. I only have to deal with my nocturnal great Pyrenees. lol

Aluminum Tracks

We used an aluminum tracking system. There are many accessories for this type of track. Examples are motors, slides, mounting brackets, etc.

Each track will be individual to your own purpose. Whether you have a 2 foot to 6-foot table under the tracks. Center the track over the table and adjust the tracking to fall within the parameters of where you will be taping videos. There are many increments that you can purchase, 2’, 4’ 6’ etc.

Endcaps are inexpensive and give a finished look. Endcaps will be a hindrance if you are going to be taking your camera slide in and out every day or several times a day. We don’t often move the cameras, so this is not an issue with that.

Saving Money on a Camera Ceiling Mount System

Several companies sell colored tracks which will cost more. A remedy? To save cost, use Spray paint such as Rust-oleum for spraying the silver or aluminum track. If you were buying the rails from different places as we did, make sure you read the description.

The slots and the rail may be different. Materials differ from company to company. We found that most camera mounts will use a quarter-inch bolt with 20 threads per inch.

Update on Camera Mount Installation

It has been a few years since I have written this blog and made the video tutorial. I have since installed 2 more ceiling camera mounts in my blogging room.

One over the woodstove to view the cooking on the woodstove from overhead. The rail is just as long as the woodstove so each section of the woodstove will be able to be covered by sliding the camera 📸 either way as well as side camera tracks.

Another one, over an area where I slide my sewing machine cabinet under the track for a nice downward shot of the sewing project.

I absolutely love this system, I will be adding another system this spring in my sewing room upstairs, I will post that here too.
